Yorkshire Veterinary Hospital (YVH) actively promotes the importance of annual wellness care for all pets. Yearly exams are the most essential form of preventative care; they allow your veterinarian to track your pet's progress and health over the course of their life. Here at YVH, our doctors work with pet owners as a collaborative team to customize a wellness plan specific to your pet’s species, breed, age, and environment, along with any other relevant concerns. The best way to treat issues in your pet is to prevent them from happening-- annual exams help to do just that!
What is a wellness exam? What’s Included?
A wellness exam is an annual or bi-annual exam intended to check healthy pets for any signs that something may be out of sorts. Every annual exam includes a comprehensive physical examination and screening for early signs of disease, as well as vaccinations if necessary. Our doctors strive to educate our clients on how to best help their pets. We accomplish this goal by working together with pet parents to explain and outline the best preventative measures, various procedures, and other recommendations as part of every exam.
Additionally, during your pets (exotics included) annual wellness exam, we recommend you bring in a stool sample. The purpose of testing a stool sample annually is to screen for parasites and bacteria that may be living within your pet. Puppies and kittens are especially susceptible to intestinal parasites, however pets at any age may contract them. This is not to be of worry though, intestinal parasites are usually simple to treat, we just have to know they are present first. Ask your veterinarian for more information on what is recommended for your specific pet during your annual exam.
What to expect
When you bring your pet in for a wellness exam, it is fair to have expectations! During your appointment, your pet will have their weight checked, as well as a consultation and full physical examination by their veterinarian. The physical exam is comprehensive and will include a check of their heart, lungs, eyes, ears, skin, body condition, and teeth if your pet will allow us to take a peek!
If any testing is agreed upon, we typically send the samples out to our partner laboratory, Antech Diagnostics. We usually receive the results of routine tests within a few days following the appointment for routine tests.
