Emergency and Urgent Care

While we hope that you will never be faced with a pet emergency, they do happen and it is important that pet owners are able to determine what could be an emergent situation with your pet. Emergencies look different for each species, age and type of pet. The list provided below is a list of common emergencies for each type of pet and not a comprehensive list.

Dog Emergencies

• Actively bleeding
• Car accidents
• Eye injury
• Gastric dilatation and volvulus, or bloating
• Heatstroke
• Ingesting a foreign object
• Ingesting a toxic substance
• Severe allergic reaction
• Severe vomiting or diarrhea
• Sudden collapse
• Trouble breathing
• Wounds from bites or fights

Cat Emergencies

• Actively bleeding
• Car accidents
• Difficulty or inability to urinate
• Eye injury
• Ingesting a foreign object
• Ingesting a toxic substance
• Severe allergic reaction
• Severe vomiting or diarrhea
• Sudden collapse
• Trouble breathing or open mouth breathing
  *Open mouth breathing is uncommon in cats and is often a sign of respiratory distress
• Wounds from bites or fights

Exotic Emergencies

Please note: Emergencies are relative to each exotic species, this is a generalized list of exotic emergencies

• Not eating or drinking
• Trouble breathing
• Unusual lethargy
• Inability to urinate or defecate

Emergency Pet Services Near You

At Yorkshire Veterinary Hospital we do offer animal urgent care visits during our normal business hours. You know your pet. If they are acting different than normal and you believe your pet is experiencing an emergency, please call us at 719-598-3192 immediately.

If your pet is experiencing an emergency outside of our normal business hours, DO NOT WAIT, contact or take your pet to the nearest veterinary emergency hospital as soon as possible. We have provided a list and link to local emergency pet services in the Colorado Springs and surrounding area.
